Protect the confidentiality of attorney-client (inmate) phone conversations - October 10, 2014
Effective November 1, 2014 and going forward, the Harris County Sheriff's Office has initiated a new protocol to assure that communications between incarcerated persons and attorneys are confidential and privileged. The recording of all phone calls from the jail to REGISTERED phone numbers will be blocked. Note that you must appear in person with identification and your bar card in order to register the phone number(s) you wish blocked. While this may be done at any time at any one of the three jail facilities, Sheriff's deputies will be on site at the Criminal Justice Center the following dates and times to register your phone numbers:
  • Wednesday, October 15 10:00am - 1:00pm 7th Floor CJC Training Room (across from Attorney Ready Room)
  • Thursday, October 16 9:00am - 12:30pm 7th Floor CJC Attorney Ready Room
  • Tuesday, October 21 10:00am - 1:00pm 7th Floor Attorney Ready Room
  • Monday, October 27 10:00am - 1:00pm 7th Floor Attorney Ready Room

Confidential attorney-client (inmate) video visits are now open to the entire bar. - October 10, 2014
These are NEVER recorded and provide the convenience of talking with your client from your home, office or one of the two terminals in the Public Defender's Office designated for the private bar. At the present time, video visits are available only with those held in the 701 N. San Jacinto jail. Registration can be done online, but representatives from Securus Technologies will be at the Criminal Justice Center on the following dates to answer any questions and assist with registration:
  • Wednesday, October 15 10:00am - 1:00pm 7th Floor CJC Training Room (across from Attorney Ready Room)
  • Thursday, October 16 9:00am - 12:30pm 7th Floor CJC Attorney Ready Room

Harris County District Attorney's Office launches deferred prosecution pilot for first-time offenders caught with up to 2 ounces of marijuana. - October 10, 2014
On October 6, 2014, the District Attorney's Office, in cooperation with the Harris County Sheriff's Office and the Houston Police Department, created the First Chance Intervention Program. This program provides an opportunity for eligible offenders to avoid ever being charged with Class B Possession of Marijuana provided they complete a 60 or 90-day program.
