Old Folks Home Scrap

Our Mission:

To document the history of the government and the citizens of Harris County as revealed through the county records and donated materials.

The Harris County Home for the Aged

The Harris County Home for the Aged began as the County Poor Farm in 1889 on 285 acres of land near Bellaire, Texas. The primary concern was farming the land, not caring for the county’s poor. In 1922 Harris County built facilities on Crosby Road approximately 9 miles East of Houston to house white and African American indigent seniors. The first superintendent of the home was T. W. Harral (1922 – ca. 1932). The recently donated Old Folks Home Scrapbook [See Harris County Juvenile Probation] documents the facilities and residents of the county home during the 1920s.
