 JOB TITLE:                  Library Director

SALARY:                      To Be Discussed

                                    Based on 26 Pay Periods

 

EDUCATION:  Master of Library Science from an ALA accredited school is required.

 

EXPERIENCE:  The incumbent must have at least seven (7) years of experience in a multi-branch public library system with a minimum of five (5) years of progressive responsible experience in administration, management, supervising and leading staff.  Experience as a library director, deputy director or assistant director is required.  Experience building and renovating libraries is highly desirable.

 

JOB SKILLS:  The successful candidate must have a proven record of managing a diverse staff and be able to provide a vision for library service in a highly diverse and rapidly changing environment.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:  The Library Director serves a diverse population of approximately 1.8 million. Plans, directs and oversees the activities and operations of Harris County Public Library through its 26 branches. Leads a staff of 375 with the help of a Deputy Director and two Assistant Directors and ensures excellent customer service. Works closely with the Harris County Executive Director of Budget Management in the formulation of the library budget and communicates budget concerns throughout the year. Facilitates plans for the construction of new buildings and renovation of existing buildings. Serves as a permanent board member of the Houston Center for Literacy and as a permanent member of the Harris County Public Library Leadership Innovation Team; and, works closely with the Harris County Friends Council and with other library volunteer groups.
