JOB TITLE: Literacy Services Specialist
HOURS: 40 Hours per Week
Monday - Friday
SALARY: $3,485.74 per Month
Based on 26 Pay Periods
EDUCATION: A Bachelor’s degree is required.
EXPERIENCE: Experience in literacy tutoring and literacy tutor training programs is required. Experience in other adult education programs, such as ESL, Citizenship and GED strongly preferred.
JOB SKILLS: The successful applicant must be customer service oriented, possess good oral and written communications skills and have the ability to work independently, prioritize and organize work schedule. Must be familiar with literacy materials and literacy training and have ability to give oral presentations in a group setting. Familiarity with Microsoft applications and current technology is preferred. Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, enjoy working in fast-paced team environment and work well with the public and library staff. Must have, or acquire within 30 days of employment, a valid Texas driver’s license and access to a vehicle that can be used for transportation while on Harris County business. Bilingual in Spanish (oral and written) is preferred.
JOB DESCRIPTION: Under supervision of the Coordinator of Marketing Programming, the Literacy Services Specialist will develop and implement literacy programs at Harris County libraries in cooperation with branch staff. Identifies literacy needs of library service areas in cooperation with branch staff; coordinates literacy tutoring in branches personally and through volunteers including: Organizing and coordinating tutor training programs; interviewing, matching and following up with literacy tutors and students; finding alternate tutoring sites where needed and conducting quarterly meetings for branch literacy staff. Develops and implements adult education programs, such as ESL, Citizenship and GED courses. Writes annual narrative reports and submit accurate monthly statistics. Works with local literacy organizations and develops community partnerships. Develops marketing materials for literacy and other library initiatives; works with branch staff to develop and manage literacy collections by: Evaluating individual branch literacy collections; ordering literacy materials with guidance of Collection Development Manager, Youth Services. Assists in preparation and monitoring of grants for literacy programs; maintains a current awareness of research and programs in the field of literacy. Obtains a minimum of 20 training hours per calendar year and performs other work as needed.
